BCorp Has Appointed Its First All-Women Executive Board

Berjaya Corporation Berhad (BCorp) announced changes to its boardroom, effective from March 1, 2023. The company's founder, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun, has stepped down from his position as non-independent non-executive chairman of BCorp.

The new board consists entirely of women and includes the following members:
1. Tunku Tun Aminah Binti Sultan Ibrahim Ismail – Non-Independent Non-Executive Chairman
2. Vivienne Cheng Chi Fan – Joint Group Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director
3. Nerine Tan Sheik Ping – Joint Group Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director
4. Norlela Baharudin – Executive Director
5. Chryseis Tan Sheik Ling – Executive Director
6. Dr. Jayanti Naidu G. Danasamy – Independent Non-Executive Director
7. Penelope Gan Paik Ling – Independent Non-Executive Director
8. Datuk Leong Kwei Chun, JP (Dato' Anne Eu, JP) – Independent Non-Executive Director

Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan stated, "The recent changes in the BCorp boardroom reflect the group's commitment to promoting women and empowerment in the workplace. I have complete confidence in the leadership abilities of all the women on the board to effectively guide the group to new heights."

The composition of the new board aligns with BCorp's policy of promoting women's empowerment within the company. In BCorp's 2022 annual report, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan mentioned that female representation in the boardroom already stood at 64%, surpassing the recommended 30% quota outlined in the Malaysian Code on Corporate Governance. The appointment of an all-female boardroom is consistent with BCorp's values, as its board members expressed last year their commitment to achieving greater gender equality in the workplace.

Meanwhile, Tan Sri Dato' Seri Vincent Tan will assume the role of advisor, providing guidance to the board and supporting the group's ongoing growth. Stepping down from the board will allow him to dedicate more time to promoting his charitable foundation, Yayasan MyFirst Home.

"I am particularly passionate about finding solutions to assist the B40 group in purchasing and owning affordable homes, which is why I established Yayasan MyFirst Home with a personal donation of RM5 million to fund its initial start-up and operating costs. I firmly believe that Yayasan MyFirst Home will make a difference in helping the B40 group achieve homeownership."

He added, "I strongly urge all Malaysians, especially those who are wealthy and influential, to support the lower-income B40s in purchasing their own affordable homes so that when they retire and are no longer employed, they will have a roof over their heads."
